what is proximity effect

 Definition of Proximity effect:-

when two-conductor put in the vicinity and current flows both of conductor. and due to the magnetic field current flowing density changes in the conductors. this effect is called the proximity effect.
proximity effect occurred due to the change of inductance of the conductor.

Proximity effect has seen two types:-

when the current flows in a conductor same direction by the maxwell right-hand rule we can say that the conductor election felt a force so that electron push-in conductor another side. which are shown in the figure.

when the current flows in a conductor opposite direction by the maxwell right-hand rule we can say that conductor election felt a force so that electron comes to near each other. which are shown in the figure.

Different elements affect the Proximity Effect:-

The proximity effect mainly depends on the various elements like the conductor's material, conductor diameter, frequency of the current, and conductor structure. The factors are explained below in details

  1. Frequency – The proximity effect increases with the increase in the supply current frequency.
  2. Diameter – The proximity effect increases when the increased diameter of the current-carrying conductor.
  3. Structure of conductor – This effect is more in the solid conductors as compared to the stranded conductor  ( ASCR) because the surface area of the stranded conductor is smaller than the solid conductor.
  4. Material – If the material is made by the high ferromagnetic material then the proximity effect is diminished.

Method of reducing the Proximity Effect?

The proximity effect is diminished by using the ACSR (Aluminum Core Steel Reinforced) conductor bundle. In an ACSR conductor, the steel is placed at the center of the aluminum conductor bundle.

The steel increased the tensile strength of the aluminum conductor but reduced the surface area of the bundled conductor. so that, majority of current flows through the outer layer of the conductor, and the minimum current is flowing in the center of the conductor. Thus, By using the ACSR conductor reduce the Proximity Effect.
